John Frederick Hartranft
Hartranft, John Frederick. Born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, December 16, 1830; graduated at Union College in 1853; studied law and came to the bar in 1859; entered the Volunteer Army at the commencement of the Rebellion, and as Colonel of the Fourth Pennsylvania, was in the battle of Bull Run; was also in the battles at Roanoke Island and at Newborn; was also in the second battle of Bull Run; was in many other engagements, and from 1864 he was a Brigadier-General, and had command of a brigade at the battle of the Wilderness; was brevetted a Major-General, and his troops were the first that entered Petersburg. In 1865 he was elected Auditor-General of Pennsylvania, and re-lected in 1868; and in 1872 he was elected Governor of Pennsylvania, and re-elected to the same position in 1875.
